IN THE NEWS

We have been especially proud to continue a much loved and needed tradition started by Honest Eds decades ago, and after originally choosing to continue handing out frozen turkeys to hundreds of excited members of the community, we have made a few changes in 2023.  Following last years success, we are not handing turkeys out this year. Instead the new & Great Un-Turkey Give enhances our commitment to fight global climate change while providing needed food to those who need it most in the immediate community. As part of this initiative we will be handing out several hundred reusable shopping bags/boxes full of fresh, wholesome and sustainable foods from the earth! We adopted this amazing way of giving back to the community in 2016 with our local partners after Honest Eds closed its doors, ending its annual turkey giveaway.  This year please join us starting at 9 am Sunday December 17th 2023 in front of the Freeman Real Estate Office at 988 Bathurst Street as we hand out several hundred bags of food. Last year our in person Un-Turkey Give was a great success engaging with hundreds of people and spreading the spirit of the season. This years program will deliver food to those in need in a safe and efficient manner. Helping  the crew at Freeman Real Estate & Spirit of Math Central will be Santa himself and a few honoured guests including local celebrities and politicians.

HONEST ED’S ANNUAL TURKEY GIVEAWAY LIVES ON

[Toronto Star 2016]

Honest Ed’s annual turkey giveaway has gone the way of the dodo, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the tradition found new life on Sunday.  The retail institution at Bloor and Bathurst is closing its door at year’s end, and its handing out of Christmas turkeys — an annual event for almost 30 years — might have gone with it, had a neighbour not stepped in, starting this weekend.  And so Karen Koh showed up at 9 a.m., armed with a collapsible chair and a big backpack for her bird, not at Honest Ed’s but at Freeman Real Estate, a local business a short walk away which decided to fill the void....[more]

500 turkeys were distributed to a lineup that was, at its peak, two hours long.  A tradition at Bathurst and Bloor started some 30 years ago by the namesake founder of Honest Ed's was kept alive again on Sunday, despite the iconic retailer closing its doors last year.   About 500 turkeys were distributed on a first come, first served basis to people in an hours-long line up in the frigid cold. The event was hosted by Freeman Realty and the Toronto campus of Spirit of Math Schools, an after-school mathematics program....[more]
